A national survey claims that GMOs may be the cause of some allergies. Lisa D. Katie, a food policy consultant, says “No commercially available crop contains allergens that have been created by genetically engineering a seed/plant.” …show more content…
In a study done, the testicles of male rats changed and young sperm cells in were altered. In addition, the DNA of mouse embryos worked differently when their parents ate GM soy. Once the mice were fed more GM corn, they reproduced slower and the size of their offsprings were smaller. Female rats showed changes in their ovaries and uterus after eating GM soy. Hamsters, in the third generation, were unable to reproduce (Health Risk). Furthermore, Jill Ettinger in the article “GMO Foods Linked to Serious Organ Damage” by the Better Health Store, a shop and blog that sells health items and provides health tips writes that a research conducted by scientist looked over 19 animal based studies which showed consuming GM corn or soy led to organ disruptions. Male rats who were fed Monsanto’s MON863 corn grew smaller kidneys with higher infection rates. Some animals showed changes in metabolic rates in the liver. In addition, animals fed genetically modified organisms had different body weights, showing side effects in organs associated to the toxins in their diet. Smith in his article “Spilling the Beans: Unintended Health Risks” writes that the liver cells in the mouse were different after eating GM soy, but the changes were not present when they switched back to non GM soy. However, it cannot be determined whether these results occurred due to the pesticides used in the GM crops or as a result of the engineered seeds causing genetic changes in the plant's DNA
