Non-Evangelistic Attitude

Striking to me, was the non-evangelistic view upon which the Muslim faith operates. When leaving the mosque, I was amazed by the fact that no one asked for my name or mailing address to send further information. The people had been welcoming and hospitable without hinting at, or attempting to, persuade or convert me to their faith. Significantly, I discovered through the Imam and the Quran that Islam instructs conversions to be left to Allah, as illustrated in the scripture, “Let there be no force (or compulsion) in religion,” (Quran 2:256), and “It is true that you will not be able to guide everyone whom you love; but Allah guides those whom He will. And He knows best those who receive guidance,” (Quran 28:56). It was conveyed through the

I had similar experience, which was explained in No.1, on the edge of entering. I was church shopping when I came to the USA 20 years ago. I went to almost every church in the town. I’ve never interacted with a Muslim person before I came to college, so I didn’t know how to behave or talk to them. My first interaction was at a chemistry laboratory, a Muslim girl decided to sit next to me. I was worried because I thought that she wasn’t going to like me or that she wouldn’t like that I was Latina. However, when we introduced each other I found her friendly and funny, and she thought the same thing about me. So, once the semester ended, we decided to take another class together because we became good friends.…

I was raised as a Protestant Christian. I grew up in Evans, Georgia, a small town in the heart of the south and a community where most of the people believed in the same things. I knew a few Mormons, a few Muslims, and a few Catholics, but the majority of the people in my circle were either professing Protestant Christians or raised in a culture of Judeo-Christian beliefs. I’ve always enjoyed talking to people about their beliefs, especially when they differ significantly from mine, but it was hard to do this in the small southern town where I was raised. I moved away from Evans in the middle of my freshman year because my dad got a new job in San Antonio, Texas.…

During my experience of feeding the homeless around my city, I chose to go to the first neighborhood I’ve lived in out of several. As I was taking in the nostalgic scenery, I motioned towards a man who took shelter behind a dumpster. Not wanting to startle him, I kindly greeted and offered him one of the many pb&j ’s I had prepared earlier. “I don’t want your goddamn sandwich, I’d rather eat Mcdonalds,” he said harshly, assuming I was helping him out of pity and not the kindness of my heart.…

Gordon’s purpose in writing The Master Plan of Evangelism was to examine the evangelism principles used by Jesus Christ (called “The Master” by Dr. Gordon in the book) during the days of His flesh. Dr. Coleman emphasizes the fact that his purpose was not to study and write about the methods used by Jesus but rather the principles which governed the methods. The Gospel accounts of Jesus’ evangelistic ministry are the single source used by Dr. Coleman in this volume. Jesus’ plan while He walked the earth was the focused mission of the salvation of the world.…

Preacher, Jonathan Edward, in his sermon “Sinners in the hands of an Angry God”, preaches his personal belief of what is going to happen to us when we die and what God will do to people who have not repented. Edward’s purpose is to convey the idea that we are all sinners and God has the power to do whatever he wants to do to us. He adopts a furious tone to affect the reader's feelings and make them feel repentful and guilty. Edward starts his sermon by arguing that God is not required to keep anyone out of hell. He appeals to the listener's emotion through fear, he uses imagery to show how easily God can decided to drop us into hell.…

To begin, I want to say I find this course insightful. Through the weeks, I have come to accept that everyone has unconscious bias, but also, that it is not something to be ashamed of, if anything, it is something to learn from. Before this class, I was not sure how to articulate my experiences on cultural differences. Also, I did not have a good grasp on culture and how it affects us all differently. I have learned to recognize that I have my own ethnocentrism, that it is okay to feel proud of my own culture in the sense that, maybe there are other ways to do things, but I like my way better because that is the way I am accustomed to.…
