Non Conformity Research Paper

Nonconformity is defined as, “ Failure or refusal to behave the way most people behave.” Nonconformity is seen today as people who refuse to go along with society and the “system.” Some nonconformists show they are unhappy with society by protesting against the government, while others show their quirks through what the wear or what their interests are. In the “Conclusion” to Walden, Thoreau argues that it is necessary for a person to “step to the music which [they] hear.” A person should march to their own drummer as long as they do not distance themselves totally from societal norms.

Conformity is necessary for society to properly function and a well functioning society is very important in making sure that the world is a good place. People are expected to conform with social norms to fit in with other members of the community and create harmony. But without people who are nonconformists, the world would never change. Many non-conformists have done amazing things for society. If it weren’t for Martin Luther King Jr. taking a stand against conformity we wouldn’t have the Civil Rights Movement or the Women’s Rights Movement that changed the way society thinks and acts towards African-Americans and women. In Modern day, there are many nonconformist marches that are popping up around the world in peaceful defiance of the President of The United States, allowing for nonconformists to peacefully and respectfully try to bring about change to their society. This nonconformity is peaceful and does not disrupt society while acting against it. Nonconformity should be used in only peaceful ways, not to bring about Anarchy. Nonconformity allows for people to protest the oppression of government, religion and people without using force or violence.
