Understanding audience interest is an extremely important aspect of effective writing. It is important to know what the readers’ needs and attitudes are regarding the subject that is being communicated. In preparing the upgrade to the progress report, I refocused on the audience’s interest. In my original progress report, I focused more on non-compete clauses in general rather than focusing on Bunchanan and Carraway Inc. and their interest in the issue of non-compete clauses. Originally, I did not consider the nature of the retail business and the tension that must have been forming between different members of the Corporate Responsibility Committee and all members of Bunchanan and Carraway Inc. The writer must determine what they want their readers to know, believe, or do after they have finished reading the report. According to the case outline, the purpose of this report is to guide the Corporate Responsibility Committee at Bunchanan and Carraway Inc. in preparations for their presentation to the executive board in regards to the use of non-compete clauses in their company. The specific purpose of the progress report is to benchmark and analyze the research that has been done thus far for the formal report. After reviewing the feedback from my original progress report, I have altered my analyses to discuss information that is relevant to the purpose of the report and I have added additional sources to support the needs of the audience and the given purpose of the case. In reviewing my original progress report, my research focused too much on non-compete clauses as an independent issue and not enough on non-compete clauses in connections to the purpose of writing the report. In this upgrade, I took into consideration the need for the Corporate Responsibility Committee to have enough information to come to a clear, unbiased recommendation for the executive board of Bunchanan and Carraway Inc. For example, I offered research about the projections for the retail industry as well as research about corporate conflict. In the upgrade progress report, I conducted research relevant to the purpose as well as revised the introduction of the report to be more relevant to the purpose of this report. I want to educate my readers about the facts about non-compete clauses and I believe that my upgrade progress report accomplishes that
