Initially, the interview began with a brief history of Nate Boyer’s pasts experiences – from enlisting in the army to becoming a walk-on for the University of Texas. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Rich Matteson’s Jazz Corner. I listened to two other tapes, and they were all equally interesting. Rich Matteson’s broadcast had a very relaxed feel; even the tone of his voice is relaxing! I really like that he knew exactly what he was talking about; considering his prolific career and vast knowledge of music and jazz, everything he said was relevant, and he was very well-spoken. His broadcast is excellent for discovering jazz songs and jazz artists, as well as learning information about the records he played.…

Discovery is a multifaceted concept which for some dictates their entire life. Christopher McCandless and Adam Shepard both commenced upon an adventure with strong motivation and purpose, developing in outcomes that left a significant influence on their intended audience. Some of the similarities they share include determination, ambition, and dependability but the biggest differences they share involve consumerism. McCandless had a larger impact on his spectators because, unlike Shepard, he wanted to prove his self reliance by distancing himself away for the materialistic and find happiness. McCandless and Shepard both proved their self reliance but the dissimilarities are remarkable. McCandless pushed himself to every limit to prove his independency wasn't relied on superficial desires, ¨I don't want to know what time it is,´…
In his book “Code of the Street”, Elijah Anderson presents the term oppositional culture. In the final chapter and conclusion, Anderson shares the story of two men, John Turner and Robert, both raised and affected by oppositional culture. In this essay I will compare and contrast the ways in which Anderson uses the men to illustrate this concept, and explain their life trajectories. I will prove that while John Turner and Robert show examples of oppositional culture in the path of their lives, the two eventually differ at the conclusion of their encounters with Anderson. To prove this, I will begin by defining oppositional culture and its relation to African American culture.…

Those are all qualities that help people overcome obstacles. The articles “The Contender” by Derek Burnett, “Paralympic Star Makes History On NBA Stage” by E. Lancaster, and “Life in the Red” by Benedict Carey all show how people overcame obstacles to achieve their dreams. After reading and annotating articles about a determined Kyle Maynard, a motivational speaker Blake Leeper, and the patient LaKeisha community, one could make the choice to be strong, to have a positive attitude, and to ‘cut out’ what’s not important. In turn, these strategies can help one achieve one’s dreams, overcome life’s obstacles, and be resourceful in helping one achieve their goals so that one day they may become the person they want to be.…
Steve Jobs’ speech “You’ve got to find what you love’ Jobs says” was addressed to Stanford’s class of 2005. Jobs did not have any difficulty convincing the audience they should do what they love. Gone Home is a narrative exploration game by the company Fullbright that stars Kaitlin Greenbriar returning to her family home after being overseas. Gone Home is often questioned on the complexity of its game play, and is often thought to be more of an interactive story, however it does fulfill the requirements of a game and I will be discussing various game play mechanics in Gone Home such as the different objects and their attributes, rules for game play and the overall design that help to support the narrative, as well as how all of this is used to create an effective story and why this is the best medium for such a story. I will start by giving the briefest of summaries; the game opens with Kaitlin, who we control in a first person perspective, returning home to a locked house all set in the 90s Their is a note left…
The Queensland Theatre Company’s famous Australian contemporary piece The Secret River was written by Andrew Bovell and directed by Neil Armfield. Adapted from the book, it can be viewed as a Gothic theatre piece through its use of conventions, setting and themes. The play follows the moral dilemma of the main character William Thornhill. Exemplifying the difficult adaption for both the European settlers and the aboriginal land owners. As both sides thought they were right, their actions justified, leading to a fight over land and ending with a massacre of the Indigenous people (played by Ningali Lawford).…
The musical Into the Woods, by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book) is a compilation of fairytales with a unique twist of life’s hard lessons after getting what you “wished” for. The play’s main story line is composed of well-known fairytales such as: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack and the bean stock. These fairytales are all intertwined in order to help the protagonist (the baker) collect all the ingredients the witch has asked for in order for him and his wife to have a baby. The play is a metaphor for the different paths a person may take when opportunities unfold.…
CEO of Apple and of Pixar Animation Studios, Steve Jobs in his speech, “You’ve got to find what you love,”(2005) argues that you always need to follow your dreams and don't lose faith in it. He supports his claim with irony and very encouraging tone by first very ironic situations that he went through and then with a tone that will push anyone towards their goal. To being with, Jobs uses a lot of irony when making his point. As he goes through his life, so many ironic situations occurred.…
