Nobody's Son is an autobiography about a once young boy called Luis Alberto Urrea and his childhood struggles growing up with his bipolar father. Urrea got picked on and tormented a lot growing up. Something no child should have to suffer and especially to come from a parent who is supposed to be there to protect and support their child, not to be rough with them. He struggled a lot from his father's tough love, and his father's excuse was that he wanted Urrea to become a real macho man. Being treated harsh and being told to man up, “You've got to grab your balls, and just jump.” (29). Urrea's battlefield was with his dad suffering abuse from him and wanting Urrea to become a man in a cold-hearted way, and not whine like a baby to grow up like a man like his father. Urrea would describe his father as turning into the machine whenever It came time for Urrea to learn something that a macho man should know. There was a moment when Urrea was a younger boy riding his bike with training wheels, and his father would insult him for still using training wheels and asked Urrea if he wanted to learn how to ride a bike like a real man. I got to see my dad on weekends, so I mostly hung out with my uncles during the weekdays and grew up with them.
