Nobody Left to Hate and Freedom Writers Cognitive psychology focuses on studying how the environment a person lives in affects his or her behavior. In the mid 1950s, researchers started looking into external factors rather than internal processes to explain why people act a certain way. Cognitive research revolutionized and become the dominant approach in psychology by the late 1970-1980s. Then, many people started creating strategies to influence people’s behavior to change. In 1990, Erin Gruwell, a young English teacher, made a radical change in her classroom. Since she noticed that her students wouldn’t socialize due to race and in-groups, she put effort into getting their trust on personal and academic levels. Later, Elliot Aronson wrote the book Nobody late to hate, that explores the causes and consequences of the attacks at the Columbine High school massacre. One technique he used was named Jigsaw classroom, where the students had to understand that their collaboration is valuable to obtain a final product. If the collaboration of each student is important, the student is essential, therefore the other students will put aside their original thoughts and only focus on the final product. They depend on each other so they understand that they need to cooperate. Aronson also understood that to achieve a goal, the students need to put their own effort to. He described the term emotional intelligence as the capability of a person to control his or her emotions. It involves focusing on one’s interaction with other people and response to other’s character. This technique is not as effective as the others since there are cases where one can not control their emotions due to past experience, for example, a person’s inability to look at someone else’s eyes because of experienced traumatic cases at a young
