Noah and Jude’s rivalry escalates at a very quick pace. “And there's the other variation: If we were drowning, who would Dad save first? (Jude.)”(Nelson 23). Noah is clearly upset because Jude is their dad’s favorite and she seems so popular. Noah is slightly jealous of this, but he does not react harshly. He actually tells himself he hates his dad to try and convince himself that he is not jealous about not getting his dads affection. He keys his car and says they are too different. Even at this point the rivalry is not at a point of resentment or anything of the sort. Noah is only slightly jealous, but their mom has no favorite and Jude still loves to hang out with him. I’ll Give You the Sun is a very interesting story on how jealousy can affect your life. We can all relate to the novel because jealousy is an emotion everybody has felt. Noah was affected by the jealousy of his sister. She threw his letter to the art school in the trash. “Noah, who wasn’t accepted to art school, has given up painting” (Hunter). Their jealousy could be cause of the way they were treated as children. Jude was used to being her dad’s favorite and have Noah’s attention while the twins both got their mom’s attention. When Noah and their mom took their affection away, it affected Jude negatively. Noah had always been jealous of the attention Jude got from their dad and their connection. When he got his mother’s full affection he basked in it. When Jude tried to take it away he became upset with her. “Feelings of jealousy suggest that when individuals perceive targets as more competent or privileged (in the case of siblings and PDT, for example, privilege may include more affection, time, or intimacy from parents.)”
