The article "Entertainment Animals - History" gives a lot of information on how and where animals were used in the past. They were used thousands of years ago dating back to 2,000 B.C. Civilizations were intrigued by exotic animals, prompting rulers from Egypt, China, Babylon, Rome, and the princes from Arabia, to collect wild animals ("Entertainment Animals”). Their collections consisted of elephants, bears, giraffes, and big cats. The Roman Empire would put wild animals into arenas to fight gladiators to the death, as a source of entertainment. Throughout the Middle Ages in Europe animal entertainment was based off of violence. Examples of this are dog fighting, cockfighting, bullfighting, and bearbaiting. While animals were used for violent purposes, people were also very curious about them. This led to explorers bringing back exotic animals to put in exhibits called menageries ("Entertainment Animals”). A menagerie is a form of zoo, with animals kept in cages or small pits for observation. It seems times really haven’t changed that much, since we still confine animals in cramped living quarters. For peoples own pleasure animals are dying, and being abused because people still do not follow the laws for animal rights. Dogfighting is becoming increasingly popular and the only way to stop it from happening is by contacting the police. Often time’s gangs are involved in this form of animal cruelty, but even if people are afraid they must come forward ("Prevention of Cruelty”). It’s a nearly impossible task to stop the mistreatment of animals in the entertainment industry. Some people do not care if they are hurting other living creatures, just as long as they are benefitting from it. PETA tries their best to inform the public about animal mistreatment whether it’s in the entertainment industry or not. A strategy I think would hopefully help would be to stop influencing circuses, zoos, and other events that partake in animal cruelty (“Circus Animal Welfare”). Don’t spend money at these places anymore, and maybe their businesses will go down. Finally, perhaps the laws should be stricter and regulate who can own exotic animals, and have specialists check in to make sure animals are
