There is definitely no shortage of crime prevention programs out there to help in the communities. Many of these programs do well and do help the communities that they serve, but some just falter, dissipate, and become history. There are many that are just great and are in things for the long haul. One such program is The Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program. This program is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership (IIR, n.d.). The G.R.E.A.T. Program is so much more than that through. The program started with the Phoenix, Arizona Police Department, educators, and community leaders. They received federal funds that were given to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF)

The thirteen lessons are approximately 30 to 45 minutes each and must be taught consecutively with no less than one day and no more than two weeks between lessons. The middle school component teaches the students about identifying the relationship among crime, violence, drug abuse, and gangs. It is designed to help families develop skills and strategies that will make home life better. This component goes hand in hand with the elementary and middle school components. It is geared toward parents or guardians and children from ten to fourteen years old. There are six sessions and they are each approximately two hours long. The sessions are usually held on evenings or the weekends so the family may attend without a conflict of schedule. The sessions cover family roles, spending quality time together, breaking the communication barrier, effective communication, meeting the needs of everyone, rules, discipline, addressing bullying, positive role models, internet safety, and influence of technology. To accomplish this, parents and youths are engaged in cooperative group activities, facilitated group discussions, and skills practice.
