Personal Narrative: Allstate

Improved Essays
Allstate is the pinnacle of a musician 's high school music career, and is the standard to which they are held to for the rest of their musical journey. Whenever someone mentions they were a musician in school, if the other person also was a musician, he will invariably ask, "Did you make Allstate?" As a high school student at a music festival or camp, at least one person is bound to say, "Hey, you 're pretty good! Would I have seen you at Allstate?" I would know, because I 've tried - and failed - to get into Allstate three years in a row. Even though I am also a vocalist, I 've always auditioned as on my flute. With good reason, the hardest instrument to get in for is violin, but the flute comes in a close second. It 's simply the nature of the instrument: in ensemble music, flutes tend to have runs, or long strings of many notes played in a quick manor, which require advanced players. Throughout my life I 've managed to come out close to the top, so I 'm not used to failure, and it 's hard for me to reconcile myself with. But the truth is I 'm just not good enough to compete at that level. Once I understood that, it was easier. I may be a good flute player, but I 'm not a stellar one. And that 's okay, because I 'm human. I am not defined by my ability on the flute. I have other talents, like my voice. This year, my senior year, I made the decision to audition on my voice, because my failures helped me learn that while I can dream the impossible dream, I can also recognize my own talents and love myself for who I am. I am not perfect, but I am

When I was a child, I was addicted to orchestral music, and I loved the sound from the flute. I think the flute performs the most wonderful music in the world. Afterward, I started to learn how to play the flute. Producing a sound from the flute can be a little tricky, so you should practice the correct blowing method first before you attempt to play any specific notes, and that’s also why I need more time to practice performing the flute. I spent two hours on practicing the flute a day, and practicing made me lose two hours to play with my friends.…

When I was growing up and my brother attended high school, I always enjoyed going to Friday night football games and watching the best part of the game: the halftime show. While I sat in the stands, my brother would be marching sets, creating intricate formations and blasting his trumpet at fortissimo. I dreamed to be a part of the sets of formations and play difficult music at rapid tempos. Once I entered middle school, I immediately signed up for band and assigned to play the oboe, a woodwind instrument in the double reed family and, arguably, one of the most difficult instruments to master. I didn’t know then, but I later found out that this activity would push me out of my comfort zone and learn not only challenging sonatas and melodies, but also life skills I would need to achieve my goals.…

Failure is not characterized by what is lost, but instead by the lessons one learns from the experience. An area of my life in which I’ve faced many struggles has been music. Ever since a young age, I have been truly passionate about music; from singing, to dancing, to playing piano and percussion. Nothing makes me happier than succeeding in something I care about, but often it is extremely difficult to achieve musical honors due to the exceptionally talented competition. Two years in a row, I failed to make the Iowa All-State Chorus.…

Was it really true that we would perform in such a big event? We all looked at our instructor, and his face was enough to tell us that this was no joke. He further explained that three other drumline would be joining us, and that we would begin practice at Center Grove High School in the coming month.
