*No money. No food. I know exactly what that feels like. My mother was a single mom, who did her best to provide for me. In 2009, she was laid off from her job and we did not know where our next meal was coming from. So, she applied for government assistance and we got food stamps. I know what it is like not to have money for food and clothes. My mother and I were definitely living below the poverty line. I can honestly say, if we didn’t have help from the government, I don’t know how we could have survived, until she went back to work. I am so thankful that is not my situation anymore. I can remember as a child, opening the refrigerator looking for food but there wasn’t anything in there. Food stamps kept my mother and me from starving daily. the government gave my mother a sense of relief while she wasn’t working. My mother could relax knowing that her child wasn’t going to go to bed hungry. The government programs saved me. There is no way in hell I would be here right now if it weren’t for the government. Knowing that the government was there at the lowest point in my mother’s life, I believe gave her the assurance that there isn’t anything wrong with asking for help. I do not believe there is any way to overcome poverty without assistance from the government. It is so hard to survive living in poverty without the government’s help.
