When reading “Narrative of The Life of Frederick Douglass” I realized what reading actually means, it means power. With words comes wisdom, and with wisdom comes power. In the text Douglass quoted Mr. Alud who said, “If you teach that nigger (speaking of myself) how to read, there would be no keeping him. It would forever unfit him to be a slave” (Douglass 20). He becomes more of a human and less of a slave through his education. He is free if he can read. Douglass said, “It was a grand achievement, and I prized it highly. From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom. It was just what I wanted, and I got it at a time when I the least expected it” (Douglass 20). I wish I appreciated reading as much as Frederick Douglass. Douglass educated himself to expand his freedom and I am trying to educate others to expand my freedom and the freedom of others like
