The song “No Makeup” (her voice) by Kendrick Lamar is dedicated to women named Keisha. Throughout Kendrick’s music he implies that Keisha is a prostitute. In this song Kendrick is trying to explain to her that she doesn’t need make up to cover up her flaws or “imperfections”. This song is told by two different perspectives: Kendrick, and Keisha. In “No Makeup” Kendrick uses a lot of assonances, imagery and symbolism to create a deeper understanding to the story he’s really trying to tell. Assonances can be found from the beginning to the end of this song. Kendrick Lamar uses this to create a good or catchy flow. “I know she 'bout to ask me how she look I tell her beautiful, and how long it took for you to put it on, it was early in the morn' She resembled a model out of a Mac book.” Keisha wants to be liked and she thinks that her putting on this make up she will be beautiful to him. He becomes very descriptive on how this make up process works. You can play this image in your head and see the frustration he is feeling watching her cover up her beauty. He believes the more makeup she puts on she’s showing the world she wouldn’t be that beautiful or good looking in person.
