Whether on a large scale through evolution or by immediate self improvement, this desire to be a better version of what we already are fuels much of our world. The ancient commission of a writer is to write with the purpose of provoking improvement in the readers, whether this is told through a precautionary tale like that of Cal and Aron, which ultimately led to the unintentional demise of Aron, or by offering more direct insight which was often provided by Lee to other characters in their times of distress. TW Revision: “The Other Paris” The ‘City of Love’ should be bursting with intense and passionate emotion, but the Paris presented by Mavis Gallant in “The Other Paris” is mechanical and apathetic. The city’s young population has abandoned the wistful ideas of true love and attraction in favor of pairing up for societal and economical gain. Mavis Gallant utilizes narrative voice and grating characterization to provide a sharp critique of the mechanical and naïve outlook on romance which society has adopted.…

Adam immediately put the blame on Eve, not taking into consideration how Eve would feel with that burden. Not only that, Adam neglected to comfort Eve when she was scared too. Eve said in the narrative, “We were supposed to be one, yet I felt so alone and detached.” I chose key words like “alone” and “detached” to represent Eve’s depression that stemmed from Adam’s blame. Once you learn that the person who was supposed to be your “backbone and ribs” throughout your lifetime is not a man of their word, the world can turn really cold and scary.…

“The Speech of Aristophanes” from Plato’s Symposium embodies how love and relationships are traditionally viewed in many, if not all, cultures around the world. Aristophanes’ story supports the conventional notion that the main purpose in every person’s life is to seek completion of him or herself by finding his or her significant other. Over time, however, people’s values have evolved--diverging from those outlined in Aristophanes’ speech and growing to focus primarily on individualism. “The Story of Qamar al-Zaman and His Two Sons, Amjad and As’ad” was one of the first pieces of writing to defy the traditional dynamics of romantic relationships by advocating the importance of developing one’s self before finding a partner; thereby helping gain momentum for the rapid spread of individualism in western cultures.…

In the beginning, God gave man free will. Every human had the chance to choose good or evil, but more importantly than that, each had the choice to define what was good and what was evil. But humans, they had a tendency to polarize the world into what is right, what is wrong, what can, and what cannot be done. Here is man’s problem: Timshel, the idea that humans are not predestined and right and wrong are not stagnant, was replaced by strict mundane social and political constructs which inhibit free will and self-determination. In East of Eden, through a positive representation of non-traditional relationships, demonstrated by Adam and Lee in combination with the negative traditional relationship of Adam and Cathy, John Steinbeck emphasizes…
