Old Iron Balls: A Short Story

Improved Essays
No fucking way. DS reached into the upper cabinet to try to stuff his satchel in and was immediately bombarded by Old Iron Balls. How is this possible? "Well, if it isn 't our friend on board for a return visit?" The bags under her eyes elongated like roasted almonds as she smiled. DS returned the smile. A pure, pleasant smile. "Yes, in fact. Back to Shawnee to see my grandmother. Grammy Flo." Maybe that 'll work. It usually gets the women. The Attendant leaned into DS and whispered with breath so hot he thought his ear would melt. "Listen you little motherfucker, you give me one problem, even for a millisecond, I 'll have you hogtied so fast your head will spin. Think Linda Blair in The Exorcist." Actually, DS …show more content…
"Hey, it 's him!" The passenger, a pudgy businessman, pointed his pale thick index finger directly at DS. He cringed. Just then, Old Iron Balls craned her neck and then made an about face. She called out. "Captain! Get the Captain here now!!" No fucking way! "That 's the hero! That 's the guy that killed The Butcher." Before he knew it, the entire plane was giving DS a round of applause. A Mindy-ish girl behind him tapped his shoulder. "I saw you on Colbert. So awesome. I can 't believe it 's you!" "Thanks. "I don 't give a fuck who you killed. Be good or you 'll be next." DS waited until she was well down the aisle to call Grammy and tell her of the flight change. He got her machine. He whispered, "Hey Gram, I had to change flights. Same-ish time though. I 'll call you when I hit the …show more content…
One quite large who certainly looked like she could fend for herself in an emergency and to his right, a frail woman who, until now, had her nose buried deep in a Danielle Steel novel. She shoved the fresh novel into the pocket in front of her and braced her wrinkly body against her seat. She shut her eyes, a wince really, that reacted with every movement of the plane. Without notice, her hand crept over to DS 's side. He looked at the wormy veins and thin transparent skin that reached out. When he covered that hand with his, he felt her coolness and wanted to transfer all the warmth from his body to hers. It was twenty or so tortuous minutes before the flight stabilized. It wasn 't until the pilot announced that they could move about the cabin that DS 's little seatmate opened her eyes. When they shifted to meet his, DS saw her glow, an aura about her. Angelic. "Thank you." Her voice was ethereal as she slid her now warm hand from his. In that moment, DS realized that it was not she that needed support, but that this stranger had given DS the gift of touch to power through his own fear. When he off boarded, he thought for sure Old Iron Balls muttered “fuck you" to him under her breath. And under his breath DS responded so quietly that she wasn 't quite sure he even spoke. "Back at
