Burke used descriptive words and phrases such as: bodies charred, bodies rained down, and they exploded. These words help emphasize everything people saw when the buildings began to come down. Many people watched people jump out of the towers, committing suicide before they were crushed by falling debris, these short phrases bring them back to seeing all of the bodies dead and destroyed. Using these phrases bring the audience to the day, to make them remember how truly awful the terrorist attack was. After using the descriptive phrases he uses short one sentence paragraphs to show what the first responders sacrificed on 9/11. Burke states, “and still they went in,” “and still they went up,” showing how brave they were on that day. Burke doesn’t state his claim until the very end of the article, the very last sentence to be exact. He uses the 12 out of 17 paragraphs to describe to the audience what happened on 9/11 before he states his argument. He wants to make sure the audience has a picture of what happened that day before he wants them to see what he was fighting for. He wants them to understand why this situation was so important to him and others all around the country. Burke is speaking to businessmen and realizes if he starts out with his claim they will not be moved by the piece the way they will be with his thesis at the end of the article. He goes making them remember all of the events that went on that day to why it is important that the firemen are able to go to ground zero on the 10th anniversary. Doing this leaves the audience knowing exactly why Burke is fighting for the firefighters right to be recognized as a huge part of 9/11 on ground zero. To conclude, Burke gets his claim across using different writing strategies throughout his article. The two that will leave an impact on the audience are his descriptive narrative and organizational structure.
