I have finished reading No Easy Way Out by Dayna Lorentz. I have read pages 440-505 this week. The prompt I have chosen this week is: “How characters react to changes that are happening.” The characters react to changes that are happening by acting in panic, thinking carefully, and making fatal decisions.
A reason how the characters react to the changes that are happening is how the characters act in panic. Near the end of the book, a man is discovered in a vault of money at the end of the True Laboratory who appears to be dead, due to his body being drenched in blood and in an odd position that looked as if he was thrown like a ragdoll. Upon escaping from the money room with the cash, a thin, glass window is presented. It seems like the perfect time to escape from the mall, but the only problem is that the window is nearly thirty stories above ground. The crew knows that there are absolutely no exits since the riots occurred and the majority of the citizens were able to get out. Before doing anything incredibly stupid or rushed, Lexi suggests that everyone searches the room for anything that could help in the slightest bit. From this, they are able to find a chest full of multiple harnesses and a very long rope. This was surely the smartest decision, and after being trapped in an infected mall for countless weeks, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if one of the members jumped out of the window even after just a glimpse of the outside world. Quotes to support this are on page 477: “The sky was familiar to me now, I just saw it a few days ago. But for Ryan and Shay, it was a whole new story. It was like they were falling and it picked them up, or if they were trapped and that window of hope freed them.” and on page 480: “I have to tell you, from all of these weeks I have endured, all the pain, sorrow, and despair I have gone through, those few seconds of opening the chest if harnesses made up for all of it.” These quotes demonstrate how as shown much earlier in the book, Ryan tends to have a bad habit of changing his mood, sometimes in extreme ways. This was proven to just be an effect of the mall being his surroundings for weeks, and experienced many harmful incidents.
