In order to be a true scholar you not only have to do well in school but you also should have characteristics that you work towards inside and outside of school. The five characteristics that you make you a good candidate for to be in NJHS are scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship Scholarship:
James Russell Lowell once said, ¨ True scholarship consists in not what things exist, but what they mean; it is not memory but judgement.¨ I presume that this quote is true, because in order to be a true scholar, it is not all about remembering what the person in the front of the room is saying word for word, it is about understanding. I believe I show this characteristic in school, because when either my teacher or peer is

I believe showing leadership in school is the best thing you can do. I show leadership in the classroom, because if I am done with my work, and get it checked I will go around helping others. I also display leadership by standing up for someone if they are getting bullied. I have shown leadership outside of school, by pumping my team up before a big game and leading them through drills. Service: Showing service inside, and outside of school is a great quality to have. I show service inside of school, by being in the many clubs WMS has to offer. For example in student council I volunteered to sell pretzels, pizza, and drinks. I show service outside of school volunteering for organizations, such as ¨Toys for Tots¨, ¨Thanksgiving drive¨, and ¨Sunshine for Susan.¨ Character: Showing character in everything you do is very important and impacts how others see you. My mother always tells me, ¨Never lower yourself down to their level, always treat others the way you want to be treated, even if they did something to you be the better person.¨ I have lived by these words ever since the first time she told me. I show this by always making the right decision and never second guessing

“Isms” are created through stereotyping that often bring a certain hatred for a particular part of society, many well known “Isms” often come to mind when imagining certain types of discrimination. Often neglected types of discrimination that people do not process until they truly think about it; for example, one in which is lookism; moreover, lookism is “Prejudice or discrimination based on physical appearance and especially the physical appearance believed to fall short of societal notions of beauty” (Merriam-Webster). As I look back on all of the hard work, sweat and tears left on the cheerleading mats, I also recognize those who gave up their time to help me and how that has led me to help others.…

I show leadership, service, or scholarship character every day at school and home with all my sisters. But there are many events, where I show service more. For example, I help Ms. Soto with the PTA meetings that the school has, I also take care of her son Aaron whenever she has an important meeting to attend. I'm willing to give up my personal time to take care of Aaron because I feel like if I see anyone needing to help I should to help them in any way I can. It's something inside of me that wakes up and tells me " go help ", " they need your help, go to see what you can do."…

Honors committee, As long as I can remember I have sought challenges in academics. Until only recently I didn't know why I pushed myself as hard as I have in school, but now I understand it is because I truly love learning. For me, discovering something new or unknown, teaching myself a new skill, or learning more about the world around me is one of the most gratifying things in my life. This is part of why I think I should be admitted into the honors program here at the University of Iowa. As a young child I was insatiably curious, asking my mother questions ad nausea, never satisfied with simple answers.…

Service, while it does benefit me, is meant to help those around me. Service is valuable in high school because it teaches me the importance to aid others in every way that I can. Service also provides a happiness that I will carry throughout my life until the day I die. The joy on a child's face at a spring carnival when they finally win a prize, or when they look in the mirror at the creation you painted upon their face benefit my soul. The smiles on the faces of people who wander chilly New Albany streets when they hear your carols ring out around them helps to make me realize the importance of community.…

Not only do all members of National Honor Society practice healthy academic careers, share a commitment to servicing our community, and demonstrate effective leadership, they also showcase exemplary characters that are observed by their advisors and peers. Despite contrary belief, character is not only defined by who you are when no one is watching; it is who you are at all times. You present your character when you are when you are alone in a room, in a busy crowd, with your teammates on the field, and sitting down at dinner with your family. It is a measure of your person that is determined by both the appearances and meanings behind your thoughts, words, and actions.…
