The use of formal and informal reading assessments provide important data that allow educators to identify at risk students (Tompkins, 2010). The data collected from the assessments address any factors that may prohibit the development of students’ reading and writing skills. In addition to the assessments, the more an educator can learn about students’ backgrounds and their past reading, language development, and writing experiences the more instructional strategies can be designed to specifically meet the needs of diverse learners in the classroom. The Read With activity is conducted in small group using the book Lost and Found (Jeffers, 2005). This book is a fiction story with some real facts about penguins contains events that could not really happen such as a penguin showing up on a little boy’s doorstep. After the reading of this story, students will compare and contrast the story with The Emperor’s Egg. The discussion will focus on fiction versus non-fiction. The Write With component consist of students in the small group completing a graphic organizer to answer who, what, when, where, why, and how questions. The student will also be given a sentence frame to complete based on his reading and writing abilities. During the Word Study segment, the student will complete short vowel word sorts and vocabulary card sorts. During the word sorts, the student will identify the short vowel sound in each word, use Elkonin boxes to complete a Move It and Say It activity. This helps students build phonological awareness by segmenting words into sounds or syllables (Reading Rockets, 2014). The student will match the picture, definition, and the sentence containing the word during the vocabulary cards sort. Students working on grade level or above completed the whole group text of The Emperor’s Egg, and then proceeded to complete an online text and web quest In Search of the Emperor Penguin (Fontaine, 1999).
