Nissequogue River Case Study

During a study in New York, people were affected by many floods that were cause by water drainage from Long Island into the Nissequogue River. Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York made the argument that "The cheapest way to deal with flood damage is to prevent it in the first place. Nearly one-thousand homes have been impacted by the recurring flooding of Nissequogue River and this restoration project is vital in ensuring this problem is put to an end," He made this point while he argued with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help protect the people around the Nissequogue River. He addressed that “900 homes have been identified as having experienced damaged related to the flood hazard in this area (Schumer).” The housing damage from floods ranged from molded drywall, water damage, and other fungal damage. These damages are caused when the house has a blackout that stops the sub pump (a machine that pumps water out of the house) and the water seeps into the base of the house and collects (Dybdahl). When the water sits in the basement for hours, mold and other fungi starts to grow onto paper, leather, and clothing; however, there is one way to prevent molds and other fungi from growing and infecting the interior of the house, having a backup generator.

this plan can be achieved by creating an understanding of the surrounding area of your house, end letting the residents of the home be knowledgeable about the environment of the seasons and the damages that the seasons could cause on them and the house. Also, the United States could help influence this positive change two thousands of American citizens that been affected by damages that could be easily prevented by having a backup
