Pohanka Automotive Group is one of the oldest automobile dealerships in the nation. The founder, Frank S. Pohanka was born in the Bronx in New York City. “He ran away from home in his eighth-grade year and found a job on a horse farm on Long Island. It wasn't long before this stable boy became a successful jockey, racing horses throughout North America. Eventually he could not 'keep weight' and then was faced with what to do with the rest of his life” (The Pohanka Story). Frank was mechanically inclined so when he went back home to NYC, “He became a car mechanic and eventually was hired by General Motors as a service rep. GM transferred him to a factory-owned Chevrolet dealership located in downtown Washington DC” (The Pohanka Story). In 1919, Frank Pohanka begins servicing vehicles at Ward Place, in N.W. Washington DC, where he quickly established a reputation as a master mechanic and service advisor, and later that year he opens his first dealership at L. Street NW, starting a long tradition of Pohanka Automotive excellence. In 1923, “He converted a movie theater into a three-car showroom and converted a Civil War era livery stable into a repair shop” (The Pohanka Story). Frank Pohanka passed away in 1958, so his son John Pohanka takes over the leadership of the Pohanka Automotive Group. Nine years later, John relocated the dealership to Marlow Heights, MD. “Pohanka Honda, Pohanka Hyundai, and the Pohanka Used Car Depot currently occupy the Marlow Heights location” (The Pohanka Story). After this move, John started acquiring more franchises and locations. “Pohanka comes to Fredericksburg in 1984” (Pohanka). Fredericksburg welcomes Honda, Hyundai and
