Who is Nirvana? Why are they important? In a society that demands conformity why did a group of high school dropouts draw the attention of the entire nation with this new form of musical expression that seemed to thrive on negative emotions and controversial ideas? These questions always seem to follow particularly rock musicians because of the topics and the visual impressions they use to express their views of the world. Their impact on the music industry has completely changed how some labels produce their artists, but how did this grunge movement start and why is nirvana the focus of it? Grunge, Melissa Benner) I first met the band through the bassist Krist Novolistic, we had been friends in school and were both fans of the Melvins (a local independent punk band).
I first met Kurt when he gave Krist a copy of his band’s demo and we listened to it together and thought it was really good with a strong Melvin influence. Soon after that Krist and
Kurt started jamming a lot and decided to for a band, but they had three major problems. They needed a practice space, a band name, and a drummer. They started jamming with new people and finally settled on Aaron Burckhard as their new drummer, and they played their first house party in Raymond, WA. A couple of months later they were going by the name Skid Row and they played their first actual gig at the GESCCO in Olympia, WA. The birth of his daughter however seemed to cheer him up. The band plays a live show on
MTV after accepting two awards. The band continues to play shows and write music even after his near fatal drug overdose in Rome, until march of 1993 when they play their last show. According to the people who surrounded him Kurt had gone crazy in his last few weeks.
He wanted to leave Nirvana and was threatening to kill himself after domestic disputes with his wife. His friends and band mates told him that if he didn’t check into rehab they would break up the band and his wife said she’d leave him if he didn’t go. Kurt went but had a friend buy him a new gun since the police had taken his after the domestic dispute. Kurt escaped from Exodus, his rehab facility, and bought a plane ticket back to Seattle. On April 5th Kurt locked himself in his greenhouse attic numbed himself with drugs he kept in a cigar box and shot himself.
Nirvana is one of the most inspirational rock bands of all time. They represented so much including that he American dream applies to everyone who is willing to work for it.
