A few years ago Nirvan Mullick walked into an auto shop in East L.A. and found a lot more than a steering wheel for his Toyota. He found a nine year old named Caine who’s love for the idea of an arcade and all the components involved drove him to build an arcade made of cardboard boxes and other things he found in his father’s shop. A short film by Mullick about Caine’s experience started a nationwide phenomenon inspiring the world to be more creative in the next generation’s learning experience. I think that Caine’s experience spoke to me and is relevant to life and education today for many reasons.
I think that we can learn about educational techniques from Caine’s experience. Caine learned about mathematics and entrepreneurship. He learned

In Cathy Davidson’s, “Project Classroom Makeover”, Davidson analyzes and elucidates upon faults she observes in the American education system. In particular, Davidson introduces her own experiment, the iPod experiment, in which she distributes free iPods to all first-year Duke University students and all other Duke University students who have the iPod incorporated in at least one of their classes. Through the experiment, the iPod upgraded itself by having its learning experience enhanced. Similarly, in Jonathan Lethem’s, “The Ecstasy of Influence: A Plagiarism”, Lethem argues that individuals who have successful ideas should allow up-and-coming artists to use their ideas and build on it to make a unique, albeit heavily inspired, invention.…

In Vocabulary Instruction Goes “Old School”, Suzanne Kail shares her experiences and trials as she is forced by her school’s English department to have all of her students “learn and memorize Latin or Greek roots and their definitions as a technique to enhance vocabulary skills” (Kail, 63). I will first address Kail’s initial reluctance to teach the Latin roots to her students, followed by the experiences that changed her feelings about the activity. I will then apply content from our unit on cognitive processes that enhance learning and explain why I think specific activities Kail used were effective in promoting meaningful learning. Finally, I will discuss what lessons I may take away from Kail’s and Heltin’s experiences of integrating lower…

Relevance and attention work hand-in-hand, but they work differently from person to person. The one-size-fits-all model of standards calls for a student who is expected to learn only in the way that he has been taught and only what he has been taught; however the one-size-fits-all model does not represent every single student. It fails to recognize the different types of students⏤some who may have learning disabilities or who may just not be genetically constructed to attain lessons in the traditional way that has been used over the centuries⏤and instead catalogues each and every one into a single category when it comes to education. Cathy Davidson, in her article “Project Classroom Makeover,” cries out for a change in the educational system…

At the turn of the digital era, it is crucial for the educational system to acclimate and prepare students for new progressive career opportunities. In Cathy Davidson’s essay, “Project Classroom Makeover,” the use of personal, professional, and cultural anecdotes are used to strengthen her argument for the use of more innovative, collaborative, and technological teaching methods in the classroom. Davidson’s relevant organization and incorporation of the Duke iPod experiment and United States job market and educational history illustrate the need for educational renovation and greatly advance her claims. However, the second half of her essay complicates her main argument for digitalization and instead focuses on the need to replace the dehumanizing standardization of education and combining play into the classroom by focusing on children whose talents fall outside of the system’s norms and her mother-in-law’s outdated teaching methods. Davidson and other esteemed…

While most kids were outside playing in the mud and dirt, I was sitting inside on a couch, comfortable, clean, and happy to do so. As a child, I detested the idea of getting my clothes dirty. I loved to be able to maintain the pristine cleanliness of my outfit, so I often refused to play outside. Instead, I resorted to a crimson red Gameboy SP with a blazing LED screen, almost too big for my hands, for my childhood action. I’d live out intense fantasies in that three inch square.…

Rare accidents on playgrounds have caused us to be tense and worrisome. Plus, lawsuits and complaints have led us to adding more and more regulations on slides, toys, and even the ground where kids play. Have we gone too far on holding our kids back from fun? Hanna would say that making all these restrictions on a child’s free time and enjoyment doesn’t reduce the amount of injuries, but just reduces the child’s creativity that came with the old ways of play. All and all, is it better for our kids to freely learn, experience things, and grow into adults instead of being so tightly restricted and scared by life?…
