Sometimes a film comes along and it’s not perfect, it’s not terrible, it’s just good. I don’t mean that in a negative way either, this film is remarkably good at what it does. This film isn’t as abrasive and in your face about it as ‘Hope Springs’ was, but this film does bring some really honest insight into the life of someone trying to cope with the loss of youth. Unlike most other “losing of age” films De Niro’s character is never made to dwell on the fact that he’s no longer a sprightly youngster, he’s actually relatively happy as he is, but he needs to keep moving in order to ward off the hole created by loss due to time. There’s a line early on in the film that resonated with me deeply, it was regarding numerous funerals, and it got me thinking. Everyone I currently know, no matter what, whoever dies first will go to the other’s funeral. It’s weird to know that you’re going to eventually lose those you love to ravish of time, either that or they’ll lose you, and De Niro’s character here deals with that very
