Nina Sorey Classroom Observation

I recently began my observation experience in the fifth grade classroom of Nina Sorey, at the campus of Huntington Intermediate School. I am very fortunate to have observed under Mrs.Sorey, as I was already very comfortable around her. Mrs.Sorey, overall, was a fabulous mentor for me. Throughout my four hour observation, she helped me learn about all of the work that go into the job. In the classroom, the student to teacher ratio was different than traditional class. Mrs.Sorey taught three different classes that were each grouped by their abilities. During both of my observation periods, I observed the white group (the lowest ability grouping). The morning began with a warmup and math review at their seat. Each student did their work, and sat silently awaiting the morning announcements. Since I observed the “White” group, I got to see many different students with many different quirks. I was able to watch some students that were bouncing off the walls, and students that were zoning out due to their medicine just kicking in. I was not so much impressed with the behavior of the children, but rather the way the teacher handled the situations. Mrs.Sorey used many different learning strategies that helped engage even the most troublesome child. I loved the creativity of the fresh learning methods she used. Another thing that I observed were how transitions took place in the class. The class was a little rowdy at times, which made transitions a little hectic. To combat this problem, Mrs.Sorey came up with an incentive for the students. She would give them “Sorey Bucks” if well behaved during times of transition. If they were not well behaved, “Sorey Bucks” would be taken away.     Reading A White Teacher Talks About Race has helped open my eyes to how much diversity there really is in our education system. It has shown me how race, economic status, exceptionality, and many life challenges affect a student’s attendance, work ethic, and grades. This book also helped me gain perspective on what life may be like for students that face discrimination, such as finding a job, having enough food and shelter, taking care of their children, and much more.
