A psychological theory can be defined as “a coherent set of ideas or constructs used to explain some phenomenon. A construct is the concept or “thing” that the theorist asserts is fundamentally involved in explaining the outcome of interest” (DeLisi, 2013). Psychological theories of crime causation focus on the influence of individual and family factors. Individual factors include personality traits, anti-social tendencies, lack of self-regulation (impulse/self-control), sex/gender and neuropsychological functioning deficiencies. In contrast, sociological theories of crime focus on shared factors that influence offenders rather than factors that are unique to individuals.…
For many decades and centuries there has been a debate within the criminologists population about the causes to become a criminal. Throughout time, people have tried to come to a conclusion about what could be the cause for crime. It was perceived that there was one single cause for someone to commit a crime, whether it was robbery or murder. The reason in the 17th century would be that, the accused is possessed(Causes of Crime). As technology and society advanced, many criminologists began to have a different perspective.…
Why people commit crime can be a very thought question, and maybe impossible to answer without some concepts. “Theories are devised to explain how a number of different correlates may actually be causally related to criminal behavior rather than simply associated with it." Anthony, W. (2012) Criminology, page 13. Theories of Crime brought lights on a various causes and reasons for crime such as poor parental, birth on financial hardship, and birth defects. Other reasons provided are genetic, psychological, and environmental; example, a mother on drugs and father’s cell compromised by drug use, lack of food, hunger, poor education, and all of these negatives things can influence someone to commit crimes.…
Studying crime is an interesting topic because there are so many theories surrounding why people commit crimes. Although there are several theories pertaining to crime, there are few that stand out when exploring criminal activities. Theories such as strain theory or differential association theory are based around a persons surroundings, that those surroundings are what causes them to commit crimes. Although these theories make extremely good arguments, they suggest that others are to blame for criminal activities and not the person who commits the crime. Realism however, looks at the individual who committed the crime as the person at fault.…
Biological, Sociological, and Psychological Theories It is not secret that people are out committing crimes every day in the streets of our communities. Over the years there have been many theories developed in order to help understand why it is that people decide to take part in some of these criminal acts, while some people stand together and claim that this is a result of poor parenting and others arguing that it is due to the environment that the child is around. Regardless of one’s point of view, it is very clear that crimes are occurring and that biological, sociological, and psychological theories have been developed in an attempt to help understand why it is that some individuals take part in these crimes. There are many things that…
It all begins with is the parenting is poor then it leads to lowself control, which in the end it will rise the oppertunity of crime and deliquency. These variables are very simple to understand the cause of crime, unlike the rest of theories that have more complex variables that lead to crime.…
Nobody fully knows why people commit crimes and negatively affect our society, but society can try to explain some reasons with sociological theories. People can look at three widely known Sociological theories of crime; Strain, social learning, and control theories. Each of these theories explain crime by using social environment such as, family, school, social groups (friends), workplace, community, and society. Each theory is similar but at the same time very different, each theory is different on how social environments cause crime, they take different parts of social environment, and some theories explain differences of the individual and others explain differences in social groups. Strain theory explains that individuals engage in crime because they are stressed or strained.…
The literature review “Psychological Theories of Crime and Delinquency,” published in Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment in April 2011, by Megan Moore at School of Social Welfare, University of California at Berkeley focuses on the psychological theories of understanding crime and delinquency. Psychological theories deal with identifying individual differences rather than social theories. This review identifies five important theories used in psychology, learning theories, intelligence theories, personality theories, theories of psychopathy, and cognitive and social development theories. These theories were chosen due to the fact that they have been used to explain crime previously, have been considered important by scholars,…
Everyone is a criminal. Everyone has broken the law once or twice. Everyone is prone to commit a crime in his or her life. Hence, various factors contribute to this act of committing a crime. Rather it’s from sociological, free-will, biological, and/or environmental factors, these factors greatly influences us to either commit a crime or desist from breaking the law.…
This theory focuses on two pathways that individuals travel down, but instead of saying the reason for criminal activity is that we are “born” with it, they give a reason that says our environment and the interactions we have with those in our lives. They do not totally discount the fact that some individuals suffer from neuropsychological disadvantages, but these coupled with environmental and social aspects increase criminal behavior; not just these deficiencies alone cause it. One major difference in the two theories is that this one identifies life processes that we move through that has a direct impact on our behavior. These are called “turning points” and occur when we get married and when we have a meaningful career.…
In this essay I will reflect on the few assumptions and understandings I had about crime and see how they have changed. Upon arriving at De Montfort University to study Criminology and Criminal Justice, I had average knowledge about crime and punishment i.e. insight into biological and psychological perspectives of crime having studied A-level Law and Psychology beforehand. However I did expect to delve so deep into the history and other aspects of Criminology during this first semester. During A-level Law I have read many case studies of murder, manslaughter, GBH, rape etc. I found the main reasons behind committing these crimes were usually motives for revenge, loss of control, hate, rage, and biological inheritance of 'criminal genes ' such as Monoamine oxidase A which makes individuals more prone to exert violence.…
Summary Criminology studies the reasoning and factors as to why individuals engage in criminal activities. In classical criminology, social philosophers Cesare Beccaria and Jeremy Bentham developed a theory of crime that criminologist and theorist still use today (Akers 2017). In classical criminology, an individual commits a crime by making a rational decision. That decision is based off of whether the benefits that one might receive by offending outweighs the consequences such as being caught and cited or sentenced. Individuals base their decision to offend or not offend on what they have seen others suffer, their knowledge of what consequences they may endure and their own personal experiences.…
There are three primary theories in psychology which help to give meaning in defining what is identified as crime. Although the notion of defining crime is not a simple matter, these three theories shed light on the subject. The most straightforward answer to contextualising crime depends on factors or variables within a society. In today's society the most common meaning 'crime' has depends on three views. The Consensus View, The Conflict View, and The Interactionist View.…
Or what makes criminals different from the rest of us? Biological, sociological, and psychological theories of criminality try to study people’s behavior as well as their mind to figure out what leads people to commit crime. Learning about different type of theories helped me to understand that people commit crimes for many reasons. The way a children is raised by their family has a big impact on how the child will become when he or she is fully grown. Every person learns through observation, but in some cases what people learn can be the cause of why people turn out to be criminals.…
