Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia, which was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. His father, Milutin Tesla, served as a priest in the Serbian Orthodox Church and his mother, Đuka Tesla, managed their farm. Tesla was one of the five siblings born, including: Dane, Angelina, Milka, and Marica. Throughout most of Tesla’s childhood, he was stricken with illness time after time. In 1863, his brother Dane was killed in a riding accident. This unsettled Tesla at the age of 7, who said he was undergoing visions, one of his first signs of his lifelong mental illnesses. One of his most significant inventions is the AC electrical system. In 1887, whenever he received funding for his Tesla Electric Light Company, he filed patents for several AC inventions. His system caught interest of engineer and businessman George Westinghouse, who wanted to supply the nation with long-distance power. In 1888, Westinghouse purchased his patents for $60,000 for the Westinghouse Corporation. These gentlemen were later put in competition with Thomas Edison’s DC system, who wanted to undermine Tesla’s interest in AC power. Unfortunately for Edison, the lighting supply at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition was the AC system, in which Tesla demonstrated his system there. After the creation of the AC electrical system, in 1895, Tesla designed, along with General Electric, the first AC hydroelectric power plants in Niagara Falls, New York. The next year, it was used to power the city of Buffalo, which was the turning point in which AC powered units became the world’s central form of power. This invention set up the basis for wireless technology and to this day is still used in radio technology.
