Nikki Giovanni Legacies Poem Summary

Although people are at liberty to say what they want, they do not to prevent harming their loved ones. This common dilemma comes to light in the poem “Legacies” by Nikki Giovanni. On one hand, some may argue that people should always speak the truth of how they feel or think to their loved ones. One the other hand, others might say that at times people should not say exactly what they think and speak to their loved ones. In her poem, “Legacies”, Nikki Giovanni maintains that “neither of them ever said what they meant and I guess nobody ever does.” In other words, Nikki Giovanni believes that people do not really say what they really think, or if they do, they do not really speak everything on their minds. At times people might keep their words to themselves to not offend their loved ones, but at times it is important to say what they think or feel to their loved ones, because it may result in a better outcome than not speaking out at all. Therefore, we might pick certain solutions in different occasions. The common occasion is when a loved one dresses a certain way that might not be the most attractive. As a result, the best solution is to speak up and tell him that their pick in clothing might not be the best suited for the moment.
