In Lahiri’s book, names plays an important role in the protagonist daily life yet the reader does not know whether to refer to the protagonist as Gogol or Nikhil. The narrator refers to him consistently as Gogol while other characters in the book call him Nikhil. The reader has to determine which degree of intimacy they maintain with the character.
