Nike: Dan Weiden's Advertising

The company Nike created one of the most known ads ever created in history. The slogan Just do it was issued in 1988 which was seen everywhere. Today it’s shown from billboards, television to social media like Facebook, Twitter, and so on. The background information about the three famous words was surprisingly inspired by a murderer named Gary Gilmore. Gilmore was charged for robbery and the murders of two men. He was executed by a firing squad before his death, “They asked him if he had any final thoughts and he said: ‘Let’s do it.”(Hype beast).After his last words he then was shot down by the firing squad. This inspired Dan Wieden’s slogan, but he switched the first word from let’s to just because he didn’t like “let’s do this”. The ads are either colored black and white with the Just do it slogan in the middle, or it can be someone working out in the background with the famous Nike swoosh.
Just do it, it’s seen everywhere, you see it in stores that sell Nike products. It is one of the most recognized names ever, it has helped Nike make millions. Dan Weiden wasn’t sitting around one day and the three famous words just appeared in his mind. He was actually inspired by a man named Gary Mark Gilmore; Gary Gilmore was born in Stonewall, Texas in December 4, 1940. Growing up, he didn’t have the best life always getting into trouble with the law. Gary Gilmore was a murderer, and a thief: During his final days Gary Gilmore robbed and murdered two men. Before his death Gary Gilmore said lets do this and was executed by a firing squad in Draper Utah on January 17, 1977. This inspired the creator of just do it ,Mr. Weiden, but the original words, Gary Gilmore, said is “let’s do it”. Mr. Weiden changed the first word from lets to just.
