Nike Ad Argument

This ad is related to women and what they think about men versus women in sports. Nike is supporting this ad which could also be considered biased. The advertisement conveys that women want to be or are better than men at sports. Or that the specific “new” shoe they are advertising will give the women an advantage over men. The ad mainly appeals to younger women, approximately around (10-30) because normally the majority that runs marathons and just runs to stay healthy, are young. The women that this ad is directed to have values of being strong and confident. They also have morals of staying healthy and getting the best shoe possible for their feet.

The ad has a very colorful background with a large caption that states “Custom fit for girls, trouble for guys”. It has a picture of the shoe, which looks very stylish, and some women would buy this shoe because of the support and style and not the biased slogan. The subcaption says “ Make every run count with the Air Span +6. Built with for support and an ArchFit strap for a custom fit. Give the guys something to chase.”

Nike conveys their tone as if they are women that are cocky about sports mainly versus men. When the ad says “Give the guys something to chase” it gives a message to the audience that translates into “Women are better than men”. When they release this message, it draws the attention of people who actually believe in it.

Many websites show that Nike is falling behind on women's and girls sales. Forbes said that Nike's women sales had grown by 12% or $5 billion since the release of the “Men vs Women” campaign. Fortune.com said that the sales could grow 2 billion from just 2016 to 2017. The point is that they are promoting biased advertising is to get women “on their side” or to buy their products more.

    I think using the men biased game for a commercial for men was a very smart idea so it would be easier to grab their attention. With using pathos in most of the commercial, they also used ethos when the Von Miller was comparing the Old Spice Sport Spray to using a sander like tool in representation of ‘other sport sprays’. In this comparison, the appeal ethos established credibility by people not wanting to have uncomfortable and harsh underarms after using different sport sprays. As the rhetorical appeals are used in this advertisement, it came more of a persuasion of how people should come use the Old Spice Invisible Sport Spray instead of other sprays.
