Nihilism is the rejection of all religious and moral principles and in the novel Crime and Punishment Raskolnikov is heavily influenced by nihilism throughout most of the story. The influence of Nihilism on Raskolnikov is primarily shown through the idea of Utilitarianism, Utilitarianism in its essence is doing the best moral action there is in any situation regardless of sentimental value. In the excerpt above one can understand that it is because of poverty and the effect poverty (if he does not pay his rent he would be evicted out of his apartment) has on Raskolnikov is why he does the Crime of killing the pawnbroker. And additionally it is because of poverty that Sonya Marmeladov has to go into prostitution in order to support her family because of that fact that her family is heavily struck with poverty and there is no other way she can help her family.
