Nightjohn Summary

Improved Essays
Nightjohn was a very short, but informative and immersive story. It informed us on how hard and terrible being stuck in slavery was. Along with, somehow amazingly doing it using so many small and not very descriptive words or sentences. It did have many different themes, but the ones I chose to write on were: prejudice, freedom, and leadership.

No, denying the rights of any people is not okay and I don’t see how anyone ever thought slavery was okay, much less the right thing to do. People always think that one person deserves less or someone else deserves more, but that’s not true, because we’re all equals. My examples only sort of relate to me, but the first is I have some friends of other races that used to not want to be friends with any white people, because of things white people

The slave owners viewed it as something to use to keep the slaves below them and keep the slaves in line. An example could be when I see or know people who have abused their freedoms by trying to do things such as, drink under-age, harm other people, and other things. Or they don’t appreciate things such as, knowing how to read and write by saying that they don’t like to or it’s not important.

To be effective in leadership it takes a proper amount of trust and discipline, you must trust them to be truthful and responsible individuals. Along with, when they don’t or aren’t you must discipline them in a proper manner. Waller could be considered one, but a worse one (in my opinion), because he was the slaves’ owner, so he could tell them what to do and discipline them, also he was a father and could do the same for his children. Some students at school could be considered leaders like the different types of aides, because they’re allowed to tell other students what to do in special

There are tons of indispensable qualities of being a leader with a lot of people. People demonstrate these qualities by helping others in harsh conditions and starting a movement that will help change things to become better. People such as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman have both played a role against slavery in society. Harriet Tubman was a strong leader who did not give up to accomplish a goal. In Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad it states “Harriet had found it hard to leave the warmth and friendliness, too.…

Jaspreet Sangha History 11 Paper #1 For much of the seventeenth century, Virginia’s labor force consisted largely of white indentured servants from England. Over time, a growing number of Africans, both free and enslaved, worked alongside, and lived among, these young white men. While black Virginians were always subject to prejudicial treatment at the hands of the majority population, they still enjoyed many of the same rights as other Virginians for years. By the early eighteenth century, however, life for black Virginians—whether enslaved or free—had become more difficult. Africans would work alongside with indentured servants.…

Slavery was one of the darkest clouds in American history! It makes me cringe every time I think about what African-Americans had to go through during that time. Not only were the slaves themselves dehumanized but the owners themselves did not act normal because of all the power they had. Slavery is something America will never be able to wash their hands of, but it gave us some of the bravest Americans you 'll ever meet in Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.…

The Virginia lawmakers attempted to control the behavior of the Africans in the colony very strictly. For starters, even if a slave was freed by their master they were not to be granted the same rights as a white citizen; however, they still had to pay taxes. The reasoning behind not letting freed slaves have equal rights was because the lawmakers did not want other freed slaves to join together and rebel against slavery. Furthermore, the lawmakers did not want the blacks to have the same rights as the whites because they would think they had power. If a freed slave had equal rights as whites other slaves would try anything to get free, including fighting their way to freedom.…

As natural born human beings we have certain rights and freedoms that cannot be taken away. They are our possessions and when someone threatens them or tries to take them away we as free citizens have every right to express our opinions and confront them. When “free” slaves of the north got their natural rights taken away, they however couldn’t voice their opinions because they didn't have social freedom. Social freedom is the right and ability to express your opinions publicly, vote for what you believe in, and get your voice heard. Unfortunately blacks of the north didn't have this right and segregation and discrimination lived on in the north.…

Leadership was a huge step during the slave era. Whoever was an abolitionist had to be a great leader, one that nobody could ever replace. This is why I’ve chosen Harriet Tubman out of all the abolitionists, to represent leadership, and the qualities of leadership that are so hard to find in a person. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in March 1822, and everyone saw her as just a regular slave, working in the despairing heat in the day and sleeping in the freezing and windy cold night. Thus, Harriet was not like the others thought she was, and one night she escaped her captivity and ran off to experience freedom for the first time, swearing to herself that she would return to the others and free them.…

Something that makes a leader is seen in all of us. Leadership skills don’t only consist on how courageous or strong you are. Being a leader is more about your commitment, passion, and trustworthiness. Leaders have been seen all over the era of slavery by many slave abolitionists that have put their mind to something and changed America as we know it. People like Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and President Lincoln have all took the liberty of trying to make America a better place and after many hardships we have finally achieved a goal.…

The 13th Amendment was one of the most powerful Amendments that was given to our country. The passing of the 13th Amendment meant that all African Americans were no longer to be slaves, but were considered free individuals. Although the passing of this amendment occurred, African Americans struggled on a day-to-day basis with racism and segregation. The 13th amendment was meant to free them completely from the torture and struggle they had to deal with, but that was not the solution.…

Slavery in the United States tore the nation in two. Slaves started to rebel against their slave owners through acts of both nonviolent and violent rebellion, which played an enormous role in the abolitionist movement. The social, political, and economic impact of the rebellions reached far beyond the Civil War, giving black Americans a newfound identity. A day in the life of a slave was tiring.…

Night: by Elie Wiesel I chose to do a book report on this book called: “Night” written by Eliezer Wiesel. The author, Eliezer Wiesel is an actual survivor of the Holocaust, and he endured the suffering of living in the Auschwitz labour camps. This book is a first hand memoir of the horrors and painful experiences Elie Wiesel had endured when he was only fifteen years old. Throughout the book, Elie describes his struggle to keep his faith in God, as he is unable to believe that a loving God could allow horrible things happen to his “chosen” people. The title of the book, “Night” , refers to the the darkness and silence that Elie went through as a teenager living in a concentration camp.…

In every good film, there is an introduction, a rising action, a climax, a falling action, and a conclusion. These are basic staples when it comes to writing and creating a film. But when it comes to the characters in a film, there are some other staples as well. One of these such staples is that there needs to be a solid leader in the film, one who can keep the story moving or put the main character back on track. In Lee Daniel’s “The Butler”, however, we see multiple leaders over the course of the movie, all showing different tactics of leadership that are stated in Barry Posner and James Kouzes’ book “The Leadership Challenge”.…
