Nighthawks By Edward Hopper: Painting Analysis

Edward Hopper’s dark oil painting, Nighthawks inspired me. Nighthawks is something I never want the world to look like. His art inspired me to be the change. The dark colors used made New York City feel like a sad and lonely place. I wanted to change this. The city is bright, loud, and filled with energy and this art goes against what the city is known for. This is related to me because I am not a sad and lonely person. I deviated from the original to show my bright attitude. I used color to make the image bright and happy. I used lined to open the space to tell the audience I am an open person. I added happy people to represent the people in my life. I used colored pencils to draw my self-portrait. I choose to use colored pencils to show that …show more content…
I used lines to make a door in my diner to show that I am an open person. I felt trapped in Hopper’s painting. The diner had no doors and was surrounded by windows. I am a very open person and wanted to show that in my work. I decided to keep the window to show I am a very see through person, I always tell the truth. I kept the building Hopper painted because it represents the city well. I love architecture and really like the building Hopper was able to paint because they are like buildings I have never seen before. I have never seen a building with a curved window like the window for the diner. I decided not to add the counter from the original painting because the curve made the customers and worker seem trapped so I decided to draw normal square tables in the diner. I do not want people trapped so I had to get rid of the large counter that was filling the space. The new square tables I added to replace the counter lets you look at the person you are with making it easier to talk to the person you are with this shows that I am a very talkative person. The long counter separated people but the square tables are encouraging conversation. I kept the long road from the original painting to demonstrate that I am an adventurous person that likes to travel and doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long. I used lines in my drawing to separate it from Hopper’s original …show more content…
In the original painting the dark colors show that it is night, but because I used bright colors it looks like the day. To show that it is night time in my drawing I added a clock. I wanted it to be night like the original drawing because New York is known as the city that never sleeps and I wanted to encourage that. I also added letters on the sign. I wrote “New York City” because I am not a mysterious person so I wanted to let the viewer know where the location of the diner is so they did not have to guess. I also added happy people to represent some of the people in my life and to show I am not lonely like the original painting. All the people in the painting are interacting with others to show that I enjoy being social and I do not want anyone to be lonely. I added objects throughout my drawing to put my own touch on Hopper’s

Color: The painting has a combination of complimentary colors that give the piece a warm look. For instance, the yellow and orange provides light to the composition and also add a visual depth to it because both colors reflect the scheme of a peaceful night. In addition, the blue in the sky beautifully portrays harmony throughout the painting, and the black in the background perfectly contrasts with the blue in the sky and the circled white brush strokes…

I chose to write about Frank Lloyd Wright’s house, Falling Water. At my funeral, I want people to know that I chose this piece of art because it was how I wanted to live my life. Sturdy and firm but lost in a forest of life and nature. The architecture of the house represents the different changes in my life and how the light that shines through the house, tells a story about no matter which way I turned or how bad it was, there was always a way to see through it. The water that rushes underneath represents how I had tranquility with my life as well as almost disconnecting to the outside world.…

The artwork I chose to imagine is Van Gogh’s famous oil painting called Starry Night. It was painted in June of 1889 and has grown to be known as one of his most famous paintings. Van Gogh was a post-impressionist and painted Starry Night from memory in his apartment. The view is of a village from a window in an asylum. I chose this painting because it has always been hanging in my Aunt’s living room.…

My first piece of art that goes with the book Night, is a painting on a canvas. It depicts a silhouette of a man looking at a sky that is split in half. One half is in color and the other is black and white, the color side has a Jewish flag while the black and white side has a picture of a building. I decided to draw this to show the theme of dark and light or good and bad. The colorful side shows the night sky in different shades of blue with bright yellow stars, this shows the goodness in the world before the Holocaust.…

    Night Hawk Essay

Edward Hopper’s painting Night Hawk is set in the film noir days (1920s); it shows people sitting in a classic style diner after midnight I presume because of the empty streets and closed shops around the diner. It displays the night sky in contrast to the brightly light interior of the old “mom and pops” style diner. Noticeable forms in this work of art include the wooden counter, which matches the surrounding stools, metal coffee containers in the aft, green trim around the windows, which curve at the corner. Also, well light walls, a small yellow door that leads into kitchen, the blonde haired waiter dressed in a white uniform inside the counter, a ginger haired woman in a red blouse, accompanied by a man in a dark bluish colored suit, grey hat, holding cigarette. The…

This is seen through the design of the store fronts and restaurant patios (refer to appendix 4). It was quite noticeable that the patio designs of restaurants and coffee shops all followed a very neutral, raw, distressed look in order to flow with the design of the district. This was done even if the exterior of the shop did not match the theme on the inside, but many of the stores interior followed the old rustic feel of the district (refer to appendix 5). Visually the Distillery district is very pleasing. This is due to the abundance of stores and shops which run along the inner streets of the district.…

Hopper said he got the inspiration for the diner from one in Greenwich Village of New York City. However, the diner that inspired him has been demolished since then. Hopper uses a repetition of windows in many of his works and especially in Nighthawks. He believed that windows were the gateway between the real world and the comfort of your home. In Nighthawks, there is no entrance into the diner.…

The artist that influenced me to create the project I am presenting today is Romare Bearden. Due to the fact, he didn’t learned new techniques and mediums as an artist, but by his life personal experiences. Many of his work had a eye connection in the middle of one’s point of view, many types of geometric shapes, and had an linear and semi-abstract style (Patchwork Quilt). He also had struggled with two artistic sides of himself: his background as “a student of literature and of artistic traditions, and being a black human being involves very real experiences, figurative and concrete”. In the 1960s, civil rights movement he started experimenting again with collage forms such as clippings from magazines, old newspapers, glossy scraps to improve his work.…

Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…
