“Night Talkers” by Danticat describes the life of a man named Dany who travels to Haiti in hope of letting his aunt know about the death of his parents. In this chapter, we see the interaction between two men and how two men who went through similar situations and are similar in many ways are truly different. Danticat incorporation of the character Claude is significant in order to explain that two men are similar to each other, but in reality they are different. Most importantly, these two men carry a relationship of a victim and a victimizer.
As readers we know that Claude is a person who lives differently than Dany who has a mission and that is to find the person who killed his parents. As the author writes, “Claude understands Creole and

This line reveals that Claude chooses himself to be American and speak English instead of being an American. This is similar to Dany who also came from New York and is the only person who speaks English. But, Dany lives in America to bring change in his life that was destroyed by someone and still caring about his aunt despite living faraway. Where, Claude lived for himself and drugs that cause him to kill his own father.
However, as the story progresses we see a major difference in the two male characters and see a relationship of a victim and victimizer. For example, Claude is the victimizer in the text and Dany is the victim. Gay’s Ayiti, is complementary with Danticat’s collection in the sense that it offers a more diasporic narrative of Haiti and gives further context of the Haitian immigration experience. Gay begins the collection with “Motherfuckers” and “About My Father’s Accent” to demonstrate the struggles that immigrants face that help them shape their sense of identity and develop family relationships. In “Motherfuckers,” Gerard is introduced as a fourteen-year-old boy who recently immigrated to America. The boy is adamant with regards to his hatred of America, “Gerard spends his days thinking about the many reasons he hates America that include but are not limited to the people, the weather, having to drive everywhere and having to go to school every day.” (Gay 13)…

In Danticat’s Breath, Eyes, and Memory, trauma comes two-fold, as the migratory experience’s rupture of motherhood is furthered by the climate of sexual violence of Haiti’s patriarchal society. Haiti’s political, social, and economic turmoil, caused by a legacy of slavery, oppression, and intervention, funnels immigration into the United States as violence and poverty drive people to escape their native country. Countless women have migrated, many of whom had to leave their children behind, causing rupture and trauma to exist within the familial sphere, as women are forced to mother across the border. This trauma is augmented by the type of mothering that develops once this mother and daughter are reunited, as under this violent climate mothering…

    The Cruel Brother Analysis

In the two versions analyzed in this essay, it is apparent that a single ballad can be transformed into different forms, lengths, and narratives. While there are many differences to be pointed out between Version F and Version K of the “Cruel Brother” ballad, it is very possible to discover common meanings and moralistic interpretations of the different versions. It is noted that the number of main characters as well as the number of males and females in these two versions differ, the three knights listed in each version of the ballad have physical and personal similarities and differences, and in one version the female speaker is murdered; however, despite these critical differences, both versions of the ballads display similar arguments demonstrating the impending dangers men have on women in the culture and society that these ballads were created in. While Version F proves this claim through the contrast of the female speaker’s marriage and her murder, Version K proves this claim through its absence of men in the presence of women. Whether a woman has a familial or romantic relationship with a man, both versions of the “Cruel Brother’ ballad demonstrate the privileges of manhood in this time…
