Night School Reflection

Night School focused on the true lives of Melissa, Greg, and Shynika. Melissa dropped out of school when she was fourteen and had to become an adult at a very young age. She has taken the Algebra class 5 times and finally in the end she had to take it another time until she passed. Greg was single father and went through his brother being shot, his daughter being diagnosed with Epilepsy, and he was still able to get his diploma. Shynika wants to become a nurse and better herself and deals with minimum wage and being homeless; she ended up passing with a 399, way above the requirements. This documentary allows viewers to personally see what people in poverty go through daily. Greg specifically is trying to find a job to better his family, but can’t due to his criminal background. At the end of the show we were able to see that he now is a manager of a nursing home. The students in this school are all capable of getting a diploma, but only they can set their mind to change themselves. …show more content…
Looking at Melissa, Greg, and Shynika background, can we really blame them for dropping out? Particularly Melissa, she had a rough life and had to become an adult at a young age. But, she was able to get her diploma in her 50’s in which I found this to be very inspiring. As a teacher it is our job to describe and show our students the importance of education. At least getting a high school diploma is better than nothing at all. Studies have shown that you are more likely to have a higher salary with a high school diploma compared to dropouts. Another quote from Greg that really stood out to me was, “I don’t want a job, I want a career.” He was able to get his career in end, and also get through the struggles of
