The act was so thoughtless that the logical side of things only came after. The non-jewish people and businesses would have taken the blow for this if the officials had not tried to blame the violence on the jews themselves. They made the jewish community pay for all the damages and then also responsible for their own ruined businesses.
The Night of Broken Glass is what brought us Max in The Book Thief. Max had experienced Kristallnacht, but he was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape even though he was given the option to hide. This lead him to the Hubermann family and Max was a huge part of Liesel's life. He wrote a book for her which encouraged her to write and helped take some of the weight off her shoulders about her nightmares because he had them as well.
