Night Hawk Essay

Edward Hopper’s painting Night Hawk is set in the film noir days (1920s); it shows people sitting in a classic style diner after midnight I presume because of the empty streets and closed shops around the diner. It displays the night sky in contrast to the brightly light interior of the old “mom and pops” style diner. Noticeable forms in this work of art include the wooden counter, which matches the surrounding stools, metal coffee containers in the aft, green trim around the windows, which curve at the corner. Also, well light walls, a small yellow door that leads into kitchen, the blonde haired waiter dressed in a white uniform inside the counter, a ginger haired woman in a red blouse, accompanied by a man in a dark bluish colored suit, grey hat, holding cigarette. The diner's glass windows allow the light from within leak out of the diner and onto the sidewalk, and the shops on the other side of the street. Furthermore, the interior light comes from multiple sources, this effect allows numerous shadows to be cast, some brighter than others as a result of being lit from more than one angle. Next, across the street the horizon line creates a shadow, it was created by various light sources extending from inside the diner. Notice, the upper edge of the diner window creates an undoubtedly noticeable shadow down to the lower edge the diners widow in the painting. This shadow extends from one side of the empty streets to the other. the well light interior light of the diner also creates a reflective effect on some of the surfaces and objects on the interior of the diner. One of the most notable examples of this is the right edge of the rear window, which reflects a perpendicular interior wall, but the other reflections, although weaker can also be seen.
