Night Foolishness

Somebody once said,” I am strong, because i’ve been weak. I am fearless, because I’ve been afraid. I am wise, because i’ve been foolish. Elie Wiesel’s book Night tells a story about a teenager who is experiencing the horrors of the Holocaust. He is separated from his Mother and sisters, but stays with his father. To make Eliezer worse the categories were Religion/Faith, Self-Preservation, and silence. Towards the middle of the book, Eliezer has started to lose Faith in God. A little bit after the chapter he started asking God why is he and other Jews were getting punished for no reason, Adam and Eve had a reason. “And I a former mystic was thinking; Yes man is greater than God. When Adam and Eve deceived you. You chased them out of paradise”{pg …show more content…
Before the Blockalteste came to talk to Eliezer he did something he didn’t want to do, what Rabbi Eliahu’s son did. He knew his father was going to die so he gave his soup to him grudgingly.”I gave him what was left of my soup. But is was my heart was heavy, I was aware that I was doing it grudgingly. Just like Rabbi Eliahu’s son, I had not passed the test”{pg 67}. Eliezer was not wanting to give his soup to his father because he was going to die soon. This shows self-preservation because he was wanting to keep food for himself so that he could live. There is still one more thing that makes Eliezer worse, silence. Finally, Eliezer goes through a period of silence were when somebody that is close to him is getting hurt he stays silent and doesn’t do anything to help them. When Eliezer’s father gets hit with a club, he stays still and doesn’t defend him.”The officer wielded his club his club and dealt my father with a violent blow to the head. I didn't move. I was afraid my body was afraid for another blow, this time to my head… I could see that he was breathing in gasps”{pg 111}. All in all, Eliezer changed overall because of 3 traits, Religion/Faith, Self-Preservation, and Silence. Eliezer loses faith in God, he is only worried about himself and not about others, and he stays silent when somebody he knows is hurting. Eliezer has definitely changed throughout the camp because of what was happening around

In my opinion, the most brutal, cruel, evil, and disgusting part occurred in this segment, which the author illustrated in this chapter. The Cremation of living babies! Finally, Eliezer shows his compassion (though, begrudgingly) to his father, doing everything he can, to extend his life : “ "They didn't give us anything … They said that we were sick, that we would die soon, and that it would be a waste of food …I can't go on … "I gave him what was left of my soup.…
