Night Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel should've died during his time in Auschwitz, but somehow he miraculously survived. The critically acclaimed book, Night by Elie Wiesel shows the story of how Elie survived Auschwitz a Nazi concentration camp. Night starts off with Elie living a normal life studying to become a Jewish Rabbi, but he gets sent to Auschwitz where his life gets turned upside-down. He meets many people, endures many challenges, but makes it out alive. Over the course of the book Elie changes drastically as a character. Elie lose his faith, no longer has emotions, and comes out a stronger person. Over the course of the book Elie loses his faith in God. He no longer felt that believing in a god who was not always merciful was the right thing to do. As seen in page 45, Elie began questioning Him, “I was not denying His existence, but I doubted His absolute justice.” Later on page 67 he refused to bless God, “Blessed be God’s name? Why, but why would I bless Him?” He refused to bless God’s name due to the fact that he allowed thousands of innocent people to die by the hand of the Nazis. When a person died he didn’t cry or pray for them due to it being incredibly common in a place like Auschwitz. Even when his father died he did not cry, “I did not weep…”(Page 112). While he was making his journey to the other camp he had met a boy named Zalman who was on the cusp of dying. The boy fell to the ground and was crushed by the other thousands of inmates making their way to the camp. Not shortly after the boy had died Elie had completely forgot about him. “Make an effort, Zalman...I soon forgot about him. I began to think of myself again”(Page 86).
