Night Elie Wiesel Family

Family is the key to success in life, without family one may feel alone and helpless. In the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the author Wiesel tells readers about his journey while being in concentration camps during the Holocaust. Wiesel describes situations that he and his father went through and witnessed since the start to the end of time being the concentration camp and how he survived. By examining the novel “Night, we can see that family is the key to survival, which is important because those who do not have family often give up and lose the desire to live. Madame Schachter and her ten-year old son are separated from the rest of the family. In the first transport, her husband and two eldest sons were deported by mistake. Due to the separation from her family Madame Schachter beings to lose her mind, on the train many people are saying that she has gone mad. Elie says that from the separation that “the separation had completely broken her”(33). Madame Schachter begins to yell ‘fire, I can see fire”(33), which triggers others emotions to were men begin to strike her to get her to be quiet. After being struck several times, the man in charge of the wagon asks a German Officer for Madame Schachter to be taken to a hospital car. Time passes and the train arrives at Birkenau, where this is the last time Elie will ever see Madame Schachter. Madame Schachter dies here at Birkenau when the separation of a group of men and then a group of children and women together. Madame Schachter dies because she is weak and unstable, but she also has gone mad and loses the desire to live due to the separation of her family.
