Night is about the experiences of Elie Wiesel during the holocaust. Elie was fifteen years old when he and his family were taken from their home. Elie and his father were taken to Auschwitz then to Buchenwald. There are three ways in which the Nazis attempted to dehumanize Eli and/or his father in the book Night.
The first way in which the Nazis attempted to dehumanize Elie and/or his father in the book Night is when the Hungarian police came into Sighet. The police told them “Jews were forbidden to own gold, jewelry, or any valuables.” (Wiesel) They had to wear yellow stars. They are token from their homes in Sighet, then two ghettos were created. They were stripped of their homes and their freedom.
The second way in which the Nazis attempted to dehumanize Elie and/or his father in the book Night is when they are lead to the cattle cars. They put eighty people in each cattle car. There was no room for anyone to lay down. There wasn’t room for everyone to sit so they had to take turns. They were given very little food or water. If anyone escaped the cattle cars, then they would be shot. When the train stopped in Kaschau a German officer said “There are eighty of you in the car…If anyone goes missing, you all will be shot, like dogs.” (Wiesel) The Nazis treated Elie, his father, and the others like they were animals.
