In the book Night by Eliezer Wiesel the main character, Elie Wiesel, goes through many different types of changes. Some of the changes are physical. Some are emotional. I think the ones that affected him the most are religious. In this essay I will be discussing these types of change that he went through during the book. The first change is physical. When Elie was first taken to the camp he was only 15 and he is forced to do the work a 20 year old should be doing. “I don't know how I survived; I was weak, rather shy; I did nothing to save myself” (Wiesel Preface). Surviving the Holocaust would be incredibly hard and emotionally draining. “Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live” (Wiesel 34). As Elie said the Holocaust made him want to stop living and I can see how it would. On a regular basis you are watching friends and family die and you most likely have no reason to get out of bed in the morning. Many people would lose their faith in humanity because the are witnessing good people that have done nothing wrong be beaten, cremated, and hung by other human beings. “Behind me, an old man fell to the ground. Nearby, an SS man replaced his revolver in its holster. My hand tightened its grip on my father. All I could think of was not to lose him. Not to remain alone” (Wiesel 30). This tells us that when the first arrived at camp he was holding on as tightly as he could to his father and so he would never be alone. “I listened to him without interrupting. He was right, I thought deep down, not daring to admit it to myself. Too late to save your old father...You could have two rations of bread, two rations of soup...It was only a fraction of a second, but it left me feeling guilty” (Wiesel 111). But towards the end he saw his father as a burden and at one point even wished he would die. This shows the kind of affect the Holocaust could have emotionally. People are hoping their family members will die
