Compassion is shown to Elie and his father by Meir Katz. Meir Katz is a tall gardener and a friend of Elie’s dad. Elie and his father needed compassion shown towards them during the ride to Buna. A random man on the train ride tried to strangle Elie. Meir Katz helped Elie get the random man off of him. Later Meir Katz tells Elie’s father “Shlomo, I am getting weak, my strength is gone.
