On January 1, 1901, Nigeria became a British protectorate. Nigerians believed that their country could strive better through their independence. They believed that their country potential in becoming powerful if there was no foreign country holding them down. They believed that demanding their independence and their separation from the ruling of the British was the best thing, along with and enforcing rulings and ideologies of their own. Nigerians wanted to have their own form of import and export trade without the enforcement of Britain behind them. Nigeria parted with the British officially on October 1, 1963 and declared itself a federal republic that was centered on three main regions.
