Throughout the course of many years, animals become endangered and lose some of its population day by day. It has become a trend to hunt animals and use parts of the animal for uses such as the hide for a blanket or the meat to eat. Either way, it’s pretty safe to say the population of some species are dying out, and people need to do something about it. Since the invention of many weapons like rifles, handguns and bombs etc. people use those weapons to clear out territory that previously belonged to the animals. Many animals today are endangered, and have been for a while, because of various reasons and people don’t realize it.

Nigerian Giraffe is among the most endangered species of 2016 and are pretty close to extinction.” (wonderslist.com) The West African Giraffe, or also known as the Nigerian Giraffe, is amongst the “endangered” category with less than 200 individuals left. (awf.org) Before World War I, the West African Giraffe lived in the sahel and savannah regions in parts of Nigeria as well as well as parts of Cameroon, Chad and the Central African Republic, but due to the extreme population drop, they now reside only in a small part of Niger. (awf.org) (sciencedirect.com) The giraffes are picky eaters; “West African giraffes feed on a variety of leaves and shoots, but the bulk of their diet is made up of a few species of trees and bushes, with Acacia trees being their utmost favorite.” (awf.org) Nigerian Giraffes are killed for many different reasons, but one of the more obvious ones would be that they live in the same territory as lions and cheetahs, meaning they can hunt giraffes domestically. (wonderslist.com) The environment all together has a big impact on why West African Giraffes are so endangered. As in the name, West African Giraffes live in countries in west and central Africa with high crime rates so poaching, illegally killing, them is something that could happen frequently. (wonderslist.com) Giraffes also get taken to zoos and are taken care of by the zookeepers, but they are also bound to be ill-treated by the zookeepers in regards to proper maintenance, food etc. Habitat degradation is also something that causes these giraffes to die out.
