"More than 90 percent of all smokers started smoking before age 20" (Casey). Tobacco products are appealing to especially teenagers and even children. Products containing nicotine have been held in a limelight for decades that is attractive to youth. This limelight does not stress how bad these products are for one's health and teenagers can fall for the trap. The legal age for the consumption of tobacco at this present time is 18. The legal age for the consumption of nicotine should be raised due to nicotine's history, effects, and its number of addictions.
Tobacco had a significant impact in America. According to Heather Lehr Wagner, "Native American tribes cultivated tobacco and used it both in ceremonies and for their personal enjoyment" (18). Tobacco was considered to be of importance in Native Americans' society. Tobacco was used in the colonies as another form of currency (Wagner 21). In the colonies tobacco was so highly valued that it was used as money. Tobacco was used for things other than personal pleasure. Tobacco also had its part in the American Revolution. The reaction to nicotine is faster in teens than adults (Casey). Teens are more sensitive to drugs than adults due to a lack of exposure. Teens can be emotionally attached to substances as well. Due to the adrenaline, pleasure and energy it can bring the smoker, nicotine's pleasurable effects create a feeling of withdrawal in smokers (Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction). Many people do not quit because they cannot overcome the cravings. Many people who do not smoke or have quit cannot stand to be around cigarettes and think they have a strong, unpleasant smell.
