A violent wave of water hit the demigods. Will sputtered, eyes still closed tightly. Bubbles erupted from his mouth and nose in an abrupt torrent as the wind was knocked out of his lungs. He washed onto the beach with a painful thud, and rolled over sorely to retch the water which had forced its way down his throat.

He rubbed his eyes and sat up, stunned. He gazed gratefully at the lake, and the agitated water which had broken the fall of the three demigods. Where had that wave come from? He supposed he had simply miscalculated the landing site under such dire circumstances. Will flopped his soaking hair out of his eyes, and turned to the beach, ready to direct Liz and get Nico to the infirmary.

How when he did these things, when he did anything, Nico felt his heart flutter. How his last thought before falling unconscious had been about him. Nico gravitated on this especially; if they had died that day, his last thought would have been of Will Solace.

Nico’s train of thought was derailed as he drifted predictably down this road once again by the opening of a door. He looked up to see Will, standing in the doorframe with a clipboard and a smile on his face.

“This is the part where I bust out of here, right?” Nico said, feigning his usual irritability.

“While I still won’t submit to your claims of hospitalization being synonymous with imprisonment, yes, this is the part where you bust out,” Will said with a laugh. “I do have to do a final check up though, just to make sure you’re good to go.”

Nico rolled his eyes. Will held up his hands, like, “hey don’t hit me”, and said, “It’s a mandatory precaution.”

Nico rolled his eyes again as Will gathered his tools. He worked quickly and gracefully as he always did; he truly had a gift for healing. It was in moments such as these that Nico couldn’t grasp the implications Will often made about not being able to fight. Nico watched with craftily concealed admiration as Will took his blood pressure, checked his vitals, tested his reflexes, and rewrapped some minor
