He learned so much about himself and life itself over time; as well as relationship from culture to culture and from person to person. He dealt variety of things and people and activities; which include his first kiss, first job, first breakup, high school graduation, war experience, earning a driver’s license. At the beginning of the story, there was rowboat and a camp rowboat which was drawn up; Nick and his father were on the boat and his Uncle George and the young Indian on the other. As they were traveling, Nick was very scared and asked his father, “Where are we going, Dad?” “Over to the Indian camp. There is an Indian lady very sick (69).” Since Nick was the only minor and wasn’t as experienced as his father or Uncle was, he had a different feelings towards what was actually happening. His clothing was all torn and his hands were scraped and there were sand and cinders driven up under his nails. As he went by the lousy crut of a brakeman, he was hit and he lit on his knees beside the track and realized he had a big bump coming up. He noticed there a fire on side of the track, below the railway; since Nick is very curious, he cut into the woods to come up to the fire through the trees but had beechnut burrs under his shoes. After meeting Ad, Nick learned that Ad’s heart is slow, and it only beats forty a minute. Nick figured it was true and confirmed it by doing an activity which involved him counting his heartbeat. Furthermore, there was a man that walked up them and Nick knew right away that is was a Negro because of his voice. Ad introduced him as Bugs. At the dinner a little man arrived and didn’t like Nick so he tried to pick a fight but Ad stopped him. Nick describes himself as a well educated man. However, I think the most important thing about his description is the fact that he comes from an area (Midwest) where families seem to have a strong sense of justice and morality. Just as his father told him: "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one (...) just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." These two feelings about Nick´s background are extremely important for the whole novel, most of all because they represent a strong contrast with most of the characters lack of morality.…

The Great Gatsby is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald about a mysterious character named Gatsby that the protagonist, Nick Carraway, slowly gets to know and befriend. The characters in the book are all very odd and interesting with their own personal backgrounds that make them very relatable in their own respective ways. I believe that out of all the unique personalities, I can relate the most with Nick’s because of his many facets such as his openness and honesty towards others, while also being humble, accepting and tolerant. I think that one of Nick's conflicts is that he tries to please everyone at the same time. Originally, Nick went to Tom Buchanan’s house to see his cousin Daisy after being separated for so long.…

The fact that he knew that thirty is the age of lonesome, makes it even more truer that he is alienated from the rest. He knows while the rest seems to not know as well as he does. Lastly, the next character can be seen as a little difficult to see her…

Throughout The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is the only point of view we are given about the lives between these characters, Fitzgerald uses Nick as a way to establish the motif of loneliness by showing that even though Gatsby has everything one wishes for during this time, he is still deep down alone because he is surrounded by fake love and care; however, Nick himself is also isolating himself the most by not being involved and only being the observer. There are many moments throughout the book where loneliness is portrayed through the characters. Beginning with Gatsby. He is a very mysterious man, who constantly throws huge parties at his mansion, with tons of people he does not know. He is surrounded by many people all the time, yet deep…

Nick’s connection of sleep with death, or rather with his soul slipping from his body without his consent, causes him to shun the action. So, instead of sleeping as the other soldiers do, he keeps himself awake by dreaming of fishing. Nick states that, as a boy, he would fish along a “trout stream” and so nightly, he attempts to revisit his time along the water (Hemingway 124). His memories whilst fishing keep him occupied throughout the night as he reinvents the dream so that sometimes he may fish in “four or five different streams in the night” (Hemingway 125). By reinventing his dream, Nick takes control of his own memories so he still is in charge of what is happening in his mind, if he cannot be in control of what is happening around him.…

Hopes and dreams are what America is made of, known as the American dream, in The Great Gastby, Fitzgerald relates the American dream to a green light shown here in his statement, “Gastby believed in the green light, of the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… and one fine morning--” (Fitzgerald 193) Fitzgerald leaving the sentence unfinished, Nicks believes of one fine morning, and that dreams are centered on a future belief, all come to one conclusion, that striving for one’s desire is more important than achieving them. The green light represents a dream that people long and search for, hopes and dreams always center on…

The choices made by today’s media, such as “news reports” and television shows flaunting celebrities famous for being celebrities, might show that the world is solely populated by materialists. But, pondering the situation, one must come to see that at least a portion of those watching these “news reports” of fashion and celebrity icons must be romanticists. They pine for a better life for themselves or their family, but do not have the good fortune to be one of the rich or famous. Another completely separate faction are realists when it comes to such “news” programs and the misplaced attention on the rich and famous. This group may take a short moment to assess the situation and then do what is called for: change the channel.…
